Breast Augmentation
WHAT: Breast augmentation increases the size of the breasts through
the surgical insertion of an inflatable implant.
WHO: Most breast augmentation patients are simply
unhappy with breasts that are lacking in size. Enlarging them can
help improve
the feminine profile, allowing women to carry themselves better
and fit more comfortably into certain pieces of clothing. This
is also a great procedure for women who have experienced a decrease
in breast size because of pregnancy or breast feeding.
HOW: The procedure is usually performed on an
outpatient basis under general or local anesthesia. There are several
places at which the incision can be made, and you and your doctor
will discuss the benefits of each at the consultation. The common
points are along the edge of the areola, through the underarms,
or at the natural crease under the breast.
Through the incision, the doctor will make a space for the implant.
The implant can be placed under or over the muscle. There are certain
benefits of each option, so this is another choice that you and
your doctor will discuss in advance of the surgery. The implant
is then inserted, and the area is sutured. Most patients are back
to work in 4-5 days.
While silicone implants were traditionally used in the procedure,
the silicone began to cause complications. Saline-filled implants
have thus long been used as the standard in breast augmentation
surgery.
All surgical procedures carry the risk of infection or bleeding.
With breast augmentation, there are also some other potential risks
to be aware of. Some patients experience a temporary change is
nipple sensitivity, and in rare occassions, a permanent loss of
it. There is also a slight risk of excess scarring, which can cause
the implant to swell, subsequently creating an unnatural firmness
in the breasts. This can be corrected, but would require a repeat
surgery.
