FDA to Reapprove Silicone Implants for Breast Enlargement
Good news for women thinking about breast enlargement. After a 14 year ban, the US Food and Drug administration has lifted its ban on silicone implants for breast enlargement. Prior to the decision, breast enlargement was preformed using saline implants which many complained to be unnatural in feel.
Silicone was banned in the US by the FDA in 1992 after several women reported ailments when their silicone implants leaked. The FDA decided not to take any chances, forcing plastic surgeons to turn to saline implants for their breast enlargement procedures. Countless studies have been conducted since the ban, yet none have been able to prove that silicone poses health risks.
The reapproval is expected to drive many more women to their plastic surgeon's office. "It's like the lifting of Prohibition," joked one woman seeking breast enlargement in Detroit, "I've had girlfriends fly to England for silicone implants, but now I can get them right here in Michigan."
